A Dream for Peace by Dr Ghoulem Berrah is an exhaustive autobiography right from his childhood to his apex career as a biological scientist and finally turning into a prominent diplomat. The memoir is presented in a sequential way dotted with some personal pictures captivating the readers till the end of the book. It is an elaborate non-fiction book covering not only the biographic features of the author but also the social and political undercurrent of that time existing in Algeria during the French colonisation and after the independence of the country.

It is a voluminous book covering the details of the author’s early education in Algeria, his academic pursuits and achievement in biological sciences, his participation in the independence movement of Algeria, becoming a permanent member of the New York Academy of Sciences and professor at the Yale School of Medicine, and serving as a Special Advisor of the President Houphouët-Boigny. His diplomatic capabilities were well applauded, especially in bringing and facilitating peace talks between Israel and Arab entities. The achievements of Dr Berrah are spectacular and the readers can keep themselves in the shoes of Dr Berrah to recognise and understand the encouraging and inspiring messages embedded in this book.

What I liked most about this book is its sheer force to inspire the reader for facing the challenges in one’s life and mitigate them with hard work and determination. The book is very lengthy but there are no apparent repetitions and the reader would find new and sequential matter in it till the end.

The book is written professionally and is well edited and I did not find any mistakes in it. The author has presented the events in a flowing and pleasant way and the reader would find it easy to navigate ahead in this voluminous book. The only problem that some readers might find with this book is that it is a very long book and every reader will not have the patience to go through such long autobiographical narrations. But it does not make me rate this book any lower and I give it 4 out of 4 stars.

This book is a great source of information on the Algerian war of independence as well as the way of living and other traits of Algerian people during those times. So, I recommend it to the researchers, scholars, teachers, and other persons interested in the history and culture of Algeria under the French colonisation and afterwards. This is also a great read for the general readers as the book has immense inspirational matter hidden in it. After reading it, one can visualise how much a person can endure and achieve during the span of one’s life. It would be amazing to see the variety and plethora of tasks undertaken in the life of Dr Ghoulem Berrah.

This book should be book of the month. Maybe it would go a long way with restoring peace in Ukraine. Sadly, i am not a fan of bulky books.

As long of a book as it is, every page could very well be worth reading. I'd be kidding myself if I said I didn't like books about overcoming the odds.

May you enjoy my reviews as much as I've enjoyed yours.

I love Autobiographies because they are mostly a true story, and inspire many future aspirations, in different ways. That a Scientist, opts to go Diplomatic, is a great pull. Many Countries have had to rise above colonization, and their citizens rise to the task. This review is great because it spares no detail including how lengthy the book is. It describes the processes and thoughts. That is as it should be, after all it is a persons life wrapped in a book. Thank you for your insightful review.
