[Following is a volunteer review of "Kalayla" by Jeannie Nicholas.]
Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas is a book about the lives of three people Lena, Maureen, and Kalayla. Together they are brought through unimaginable circumstances. They form a family even though they are not related by blood. When Lena first met Kalayla she is overcome by the feeling of wanting to help her in any way to become a better person. Even though Kalayla does not appreciate her poking her nose in her business. They come to form a very good bond later on. They depend on each other emotionally and when Kalayla learns the truth about her mother’s family, she runs to Lena for emotional support. Her mother Maureen has gone through a lot in her life and faced a big loss but together they overcome everything. Even though they are not related by blood they form a bond stronger than that a family-related by blood could ever have.
What I liked the most about the book was how independent Kalayla was. She always knew that to have something one must earn it. You cannot get anything for free without working hard. She always worked for everything. The part I liked the most was when she wanted to know how to dance. She worked her way to earn the money to go to a dance class. She also knew how to keep time and manage her schedule well. She did not need her mother or any adult to tell her what she was supposed to do at any time. I also liked the way she always looked out for her mother. Even at the time when she was mad at her she never forgot to look after her. The scenes in the book are very well written, and some of them made me laugh so hard while some of them were too emotional.
What I did not like about the book was the character of Joey. He treated women with no respect and implied that a woman is not supposed to have a say in marriage. He treated them like property which is no way for a woman to be treated whether married or not they are supposed to be treated with respect. Other than that the book is amazing and inspiring.
I would recommend this book to young adults and also older readers. I would also recommend the book to those who like relationship drama and mystery stories.
I give the book a 3 out of 4 stars because the book is very well edited. The book is inspiring and the storyline is amazing.
