Join identical twin brothers Ron and Bing on a night they will never forget, in J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison’s latest book Demon Freaks. These two troublemakers and their bandmates, Meat and Kaitlyn get pulled into a fight against dark spirits and two shadowy secret organisations. Will Ron and Bing be able to save Meat and Kailyn from being sacrificed by the Golfers? Can Meat get his head around the new powers he has discovered in time to get free? Find out in this exciting and comedic YA novel.

I genuinely enjoyed most of Demon Freaks. I was lucky enough to review Fish Wielder another one of the authors YA novels and this book has all the same charm and ridiculous sense of humour. The main characters are well-thought-out and the relationship between Ron and Bing feels genuine. Both are caring, and they looked after each other, truly seeming upset when the other is in trouble.

That brings us to what I didn’t like. This is a novel that has a cheeky sense of humour and reading level that seems to be written with the youngest members of the Young Adult group in mind. However, there was a part of the book that was inappropriate for this target audience. It should and could have been removed by the author without changing the story at all. Without spoilers, some charters get captured and for reasons, I cannot fathom the charters clothes are taken from them. They are left naked for almost the rest of the book. Just to be clear these scenes are not sexualised, but I still find them problematic because these characters are sixteen-year-olds. This somewhat ruined the book for me.

I am giving this a 2 out of 4 stars rating. I am taking one star off because as mentioned above I think some parts should have been edited out. I am taking the second stare off because I don’t think it needs another edit and because it wasn’t edited well it lost focus on whom it was written for.

This book, like others by this author are written in a way that would be easy for 12 to 14-year-old readers with dyslexia, however, I cannot recommend this book to them. “Meat’s penis shrivel as he realized that he was strapped naked to a huge iron cross…” Lines like this are just not okay for this age group or any aged readers. I can only recommend this to J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison fans.
