Rulers of the Galaxy is the first novel in a series that sets the stage for a sweeping intergalactic tale of regicide, conquest, intrigue, and high adventure.
The story includes all our favorite tropes: a chosen mystical child; an amnesic hero racing against time to unravel a secret; villains of nightmarish evil.
Tayma Tameem is an author who writes only the type of books she loves to read. She aims to break away from over-used tropes and create original and exciting stories.
Tayma Tameem has a well-designed website featuring her 22 previous novels. She has a fertile imagination and can write across a variety of genres.
Rulers of the Galaxy has so many overused tropes that the novel cannot aspire to break molds in any literary genre. It is not an offense to write in existing genres if you have the imagination to deliver stories in creative and provocative ways. There are a few clever plots and unexpected twists, but these do not have sufficient substance to set the novel apart.
The protagonist in this novel has a flat character arc. The antagonists lose any opportunity to achieve character complexity after the first fifty or so gratuitous kills. The reader can't keep track of multiple warring factions and alliances that switch line by line.
Only the anti-hero character in this novel is kept me reading.
Rulers of the Galaxy has more plot holes than a gopher habitat. Initially, I thought I had skipped a chapter. The second time I read the book, it was clear that there is a missing chunk of the story. In time, in future books, I hope this will be clarified.
The opening chapters contain a few odd sentence structures and questionable word choices. The pretentious language usage makes reading the remaining chapters uncomfortable It's as if random words have been plugged into a thesaurus to make the context more interesting. The result is phrases that are out of context. This is not a commentary on the grammar used in the book – it is commentary that English has been used in a clumsy manner. There are two spelling mistakes in the novel. This is a poorly edited book probably made available by a vanity publisher.
The Rulers of the Galaxy novel has been crafted with the finesse of a blind man wielding a cudgel.
Despite the criticism, I believe the author has talent that would benefit from professional editing and proofreading services.
I would not recommend this book in its current edition. I suggest a re-write of the book, using simple language. I look forward to seeing Miss Tameem’s work featured by a traditional publishing house.
I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars.
