Review of Joey

[Following is a volunteer review of "Joey" by Jennie Linnane.]
Joey is the main character of this book, but all the characters are worth noting. It was very easy to get to know all the different characters and how their lives intertwined. It was also very engaging to read about peoples' lives on the other side of the world, so far from my own life.
Joey had an unfortunate start in life, but he had many advantages of a loving family. With the help of his sisters and friends, he was able to reconcile his feelings through the unfortunate loss of his father and abuse of his stepfather. He became a person that everyone loved, except for one man that wanted to use him as a scapegoat.
I enjoyed reading about each of the characters and how their lives all involved Joey in some way. Joey's thoughts and actions had a great influence on everyone he met.
There wasn't a lot of emphasis on Joey's stepfather's abuse. When I read the description of the book, I was expecting that to be one of the main things that helped shape him when he was young. Only a few instances were mentioned, and not much explanation as to why Joey was so gentle and considerate when he could have easily become aggressive and angry.
I would rate the book a 3 out of 4. I felt the book was missing an ending. I suppose that is so one would have to read the next book in the series to find out what happened.
I would recommend Joey: The Man from Ironbark Hill by Jennie Linnane to anyone from 15 to 99. It is a good story, told by everyone in a different way, so you get a feeling for all the characters in the book.
