It was easy growing up in South Dakota in the 1950s. Playing in the streets, riding bikes, and being carefree were all part of childhood. Dan Davis grew up in a simple family. He did well in school, was popular, and had a good life. Dan became a jockey while still in school. This was the start of his career. He soon realized that making money was his true calling and decided to pursue it. He was exceedingly successful, earning more than both of his parents combined.

By the time he went to college, he had to focus on his studies. Due to bad eating habits, he became lethargic and overslept often. While cramming for an exam, a fellow student introduced him to pills that helped him study. This was his introduction to the world of drugs. It was the start of his life as a criminal. What followed was a life on the run from the authorities, while trying to survive in countries like Mexico and Venezuela.

Gringo by Dan "Tito" Davis kept me guessing until the very last page. Peter Conti did an excellent job of putting Dan's life story into a readable and well-flowing format. I liked how the different characters were described, giving the impression that they could be a neighbor or friend. Dan was able to conceal his true identity from those around him for many years, raising the question of how well we really know the people we interact with daily.

There was nothing that I disliked about this book. I was rooting for Dan to escape the authorities. Even though he was dealing in narcotics, the reader is left with the impression that the odds were unfairly stacked against him. Leaving his family behind was also a decision that he took because of circumstances. The way in which the government pursued him, leaves one questioning the motives of those in power. Most people will rather escape than be imprisoned for a crime they did not commit.

There were no errors. The book was professionally edited. I enjoyed reading this book tremendously. I am giving the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Many scenes contain sex, violence, and other elements that are inappropriate for children. I recommend this book to mature readers who enjoy fast-paced action. If you are easily offended, you should avoid this one. I'm sure this will be turned into a film at some point.

I wished Davis didn't have to do drugs to concentrate in school. This is an insightful and informative review.

This book shows excellently how did peer pressure become the starting point of the downfall of a person's life. Thank you for the review!

I like drug dealer movies but I have never tried a novel before and this maybe the one I have been waiting for. It was a pleasure reading your review.
