Review of The Reel Sisters
The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings tells the stories of five women bonded together by their love for fly fishing. Rose, Sophie, Veronica, Amanda, and Melody. Rose is the eldest in the group. She has been fishing since she was a little girl and is more than happy to share her knowledge with the girls. She owns a cabin in the mountains, one that 'sits right on the Arkansas River.'
Sophie and Veronica are both in their early forties. Sophie grew up on a farm in Kansas - but moved to Colorado at the age of twenty-six - when she fell in love with fly fishing. She owns a greenhouse and nursery business; because you 'can't take the farm out of the girl.' Veronica is a CEO in her company, Executive Coaching for Women. Fly fishing changed her life, something she would have never, in her wildest dreams, imagined. She describes herself as having been a bona fide city girl complete with a wig and manicured nails, one who had never stepped foot in the woods. But life is full of surprises, isn't it?
Amanda and Melody are both in their early twenties. Amanda is a fifth-grade teacher and a mother to two lovely kids; Jordan, three years old, and Parker, eighteen months old. Melody is such an interesting character; she loves photography, is exceptionally talented in music, but still struggles at finding her identity.
I loved that this book focuses on the theme of friendship - which is why I chose to read it. Right before the first section, there's a line, "What are you wading for?" And right before that is a quote by Henry David Thoreau, "Many people fish all their lives not knowing it's not the fish they are after..." Even though these women didn't always fish together, fly fishing brought and connected them. And what these quotes tell us is that fly fishing is more than just fly fishing.
My only complaint is that we aren't told more about Rose and her life as it is now, besides fly fishing. Sophie has her business, Veronica has her company, Amanda goes to her family and her teaching job, and Melody does what Melody does - but what about Rose? What goes on in her life when she's not at the cabin? Or fly fishing?
I rate The Reel Sisters 4 out of 4 stars. It excelled in passing on lessons that both apply to fly fishing and to life in general - while at the same time being interesting. It also features strong, well-developed characters. In fact, it was hard for me to believe that they weren't real people living real lives, at first, because of the solid backgrounds the author gave them. The text is also well edited. I recommend this book to anyone interested in fly fishing. It's divided into ten sections, and each section gives a lesson on fly fishing, progressively. By reading this book, you'll learn more about the art than your ever could otherwise.

I just kept expecting to read more about her, I guess that's why I noticed. And I guess it wasn't really important (even though it felt to me like a loose end), because something simple would have done it, really. I'd have been satisfied with her being retired, living in Littleton (or elsewhere), and volunteering at a shelter a couple hours a week (well, or something else!). Thank your so much for stopping by!Reader-247 wrote: ↑17 Sep 2021, 06:40 Great observation, I didn't think about Rose that way. Thanks for a nice review

It is, the writer managed to seamlessly introduce all the characters into the story. If you get the chance, do give it a read.
