[Following is a volunteer review of "Sandra Eden's War" by Michael Low.]
Sandra Eden’s War by Mike Low is a story about a woman’s bravery during World War II. British Special Operations Executive agent, Sandra Eden, is assigned to travel to France and help the French Resistance fight the Germans that have taken hold of their country. Through various operations, Sandra Eden earns the respect of the French Resistance fighters and leaders, called Maquis, as she fights the Gestapo, the German police, and soldiers positioned in France. An amazing tale of the fight for freedom during World War II.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I’ve always been fond of the historical fiction genre, it is an interesting and engaging way of learning about history, and I think Mike Low’s book portrays this perfectly. Sandra’s story is captivating and inspiring, as a woman, she is doubted on many occasions by the men surrounding her whether she’s up for the job, and she proves she is more than qualified and earns the respect of everyone around her, but the author does a terrific job portraying and making you feel her frustration on being doubted of her ability just because of her gender. The book is historically accurate using terms such as roman candle, Maquis, and Gestapo, and explaining to them so you won’t be left in doubt. The story is straightforward and full of action, it seemed like our protagonist never stopped, showing how hectic wartime can be, full of surprises and betrayals.
One negative aspect about the book, in my opinion, was how some characters we are introduced to in the beginning just get sent off and never spoken off again, such as Nancy Lake. I would’ve enjoyed reading more about what happened with Nancy. Another thing that I found to be pretty obvious was who was going to be the person to betray the Resistance, more secrecy and mystery would’ve been appreciated, but overall I liked it.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book seems professionally edited, not a single error was spotted when I read it. The book is very clear, even when the thoughts of different characters are portrayed you won't get lost on who is thinking. It follows a chronological order and seems to be historically correct, even though Sandra's story is fictional, details such as the SOE, the French Resistance, among others are true. An amazing work of historical fiction.
I recommend this book to people who like history, especially World War II. This book is full of historical facts, espionage, fighting, and tension. It is an easy read, if you’re looking for something to entertain you for a couple of hours, look no further! I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
