[Following is a volunteer review of "Black Soul Eater" by Bryan Nyaude.]
Black Soul Eater by Bryan Nyaude is the third installment of the Legacies of Monsters series. The story follows the soul-searching adventures of our main protagonist as he traverses into the world of darkness. Once a feared tyrant, our protagonist now faces a journey of self-loathing and unease. While on the hunt for a glimpse of happiness after losing his humanity to gain immortality, the soul eater yearns for the power he once had. The world in which the author creates was not all rainbows and sunshine but consists of cold, dark, and calculated creatures whose only goal is to create chaos and mischief. Amidst the harrowing existence of monsters lies the greatest horror of them all -humanity. What will become of our main protagonist that continues to find himself in unsettling, unforeseen situations? Will his lack of humanity prevail over the need to help others? The story provides these answers and more.
Upon observation, the story has a good premise. It is not preppy and optimistic as most of the books I have read but has a dark undertone that is pretty interesting. Not all writers can adequately portray the darker side of humanity while characterizing characters that are frightening to imagine. The main character would generally appear as the hero, so it is nice to read a story from the villains' pov.
Furthermore, as someone that did not read the entire series of books, it was not difficult to figure out what was going on. There are times when the author draws back at events that happened in the previous books, but it is not substantial to the current story. Achieving this level of individuality made it easier to follow the events of the book with a clear understanding of what was going on. The reader can enjoy the book as a stand-alone book.
Finally, a good series coexists with the proper world-building techniques. The world within the series seems to be vast as it is different planets in space, but the story itself never loses the reader's attention. By focusing on only a few of the cities in each book, the author effectively expanded the story's universe.
On the other hand, the layout of the book is off-putting as it is uneven and crooked. The page numbers do not align, which bothered me a great deal. There were several errors in the book, which made it difficult to follow the story sometimes.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Although there were several errors within the book, it was still enjoyable and kept me invested in the story. The world-building within the story is unique and allows the author to be flexible in his narratives.
I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy dark, supernatural fiction.
