To immerse yourself in a language in a way you can also connect with the people and culture of any country, learning and using idioms is crucial. Idiom Attack Vol. 1: Everyday Living (German edition) aims at teaching English Idioms from advanced beginners to intermediate learners. The 25 chapters are sorted by themes like food, travel or work related activities. Each chapter begins with a list of 10-15 idioms per theme, with example sentences in both German and English, explanations of meaning and usage, fill-in-the-blank sentences, crosswords and little short stories. Accompanied by each short story are multiple questions about the content, as well as questions for discussions to practice using idioms. The German edition is one of six languages that the Idiom attack team around Peter N. Liptak published. Their experience promised great quality, and I was not disappointed.

As a non-native English speaker, I found this book quite helpful. Throughout my English learning process, I often came across multiple idioms whose meaning I sometimes could only grasp vaguely out of context, which is why I was not confident enough to use them myself. The clear, 3-part-structure (definition, fill-in-the-blank, short story) accompanied by audio files made them pretty simple to memorize. With the discussion questions you can practice using the idioms with another partner/friend/student and improve on your speaking skills. Liptak manages to overcome the limitations of textbooks and make the learning experience rather fun and engaging.

Some idioms like „to wake up“ or „to go to sleep“ may seem a little too easy to more advanced English learners. However, one has to take into consideration that this book is aimed at advanced beginners to intermediate speakers, so there is a wide range to cover. In a few instances, the German translation was a bit awkward, but this is just a matter of stylistic taste and barely bothered the reading experience.

Overall I would highly recommend Idiom Attack Vol. 1: Everyday Living (German edition) to any learner of the English language, and because every text is translated one could use it the other way around as a tool to improve on the German language if need be. Furthermore, Idiom Attack can function as extended teaching material for English teachers.

Because the book is well-made, engaging and easy to use I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars.
