Fouling in business and athletics, like the name suggests is a book that highlights the questionable activities going on behind some big businesses as well as in college athletics.

Gonzalo Fernandez dives deep into how unethical practices are at the root of the downfall of major companies. The massive wave of big giants in the business world meeting their demise has led him to dedicate a whole chapter where he meditates on whether early publishing of his book would have saved some companies from their ultimate demise.

Gonzalo, who has been in the business world for decades gives us an inside look at how unethical business executives have been known to massage the numbers of the business which has in turn led to misleading investors and the general public. Later, on when the cover ups were exposed, he shows the massive mess that is left behind in the after math of the chaos.

In the athletic world, despite making hundreds of millions of dollars every year in sports, the players who are indispensable, are the ones who eat last in terms of benefiting from the sport. The coaches who can be compared to the business executives are the ones in charge of decisions. Predictably, they make decisions that favour them the most. The student athletes get the bitter end of the stick despite being the most indispensable element in the equation.

In a letter from his literary agent, Gonzalo writes, "a trade book would have somewhat of a struggle audience because the ethical financial executives understand he importance of avoiding unethical practices while the unethical ones wont feel a need to read the book to gain a better understanding.” All hope is not lost however, as there have been improvements in the business world in terms of the ethical violations that have transpired over the years. This has come in the form of legislation companies that showed a steady decline would go through a turn around in their financial statements.

Despite having very little knowledge of the business world, the author has made it very easy for me to grasp the contents of the book. His work is explained spectacularly well and is easy to read and understand. The amount of time and research that went into this book/ its history is what really makes the book exceptional. I also really enjoyed the simplicity with which the book was written though it consists of heavily technical terms, he has made it easy to debunk and understand. His ability to tell the story and watch the events unfold is nothing short of remarkable.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking to get into business or to start out in the corporate world. The wealth of information available in this book is staggering. It also comes with some common pitfalls to avoid. Gonzalez talks about the pressure that comes from others in the business to try and drag others in their nefarious activities. I would give this book a 3 out of 4 stars, only because of the two page layout that it came in making it hard navigate from the end of a page onto a new one. There were also some editorial mistakes but other than that, the book was an enlightening read.
