I believe each of us have some kind of emptiness in our life's and want to fill it anyhow but maybe later we just give up and get depress about it. As you explained, I liked Tommy's character and found it relatable for me. Yes, you are right he recognizes this hole after the great incident of the family but Dodie recognized it at her small age only. Thank you for the insight!
