Review by DanaGeorgiaLee -- The Devil Pulls the Strings
Two accidents place Boone on the path he’s on. The loss of his parents which caused a wendigo to set its sights on him, and the injury he unwittingly delt to his best friend. Both set the stage for the journey that Boone embarks on. From time travel and folk tales, to a touch of romance and the surreal, Boone must join forces with strangers turned friends to stop the summoning of the Devil. Along the way he’ll enter into a world he didn’t know existed and become the master of his story.
J. W. Zareks The Devil Pulls the Strings has an incredibly fast-moving plot that even from the very first chapter hooks you. Be pulled along with Boone and Sapphire as they try and avoid certain death while racing through a number of ‘quests’ in record time. There’s no room for boring pauses or dissatisfying lulls. Every inch of the book is crammed with something new and exciting, even for those who have seen this all before. Think you know Baba Yaga or Wendigo’s? Think again.
From the very beginning, small chapters separate the action into bite-sized pieces. Zarek, in a distinctive voice and writing style, makes a meet-cute with a large helping of death a lot of fun. Even the mundane moments of the real world are infused with a little magic in a book packed in that and more. A strange taxi with a bizarre fee is only one example of this.
With impeccable editing, and well thought out flow, there is little to say in terms of negatives to this book. And even a first-person voice is of little consequence in such a fun journey. Because while some minor things remain up in the air, the ending leaves off with a promise of a sequel, an exciting prospect to the continuation of an enjoyable book.
I would rate The Devil Pulls the Strings 4 out of 4 stars. A very approachable book, for a number of different audiences. Whether this is the first chapter book you’re reading, or a charming easy read for a well-seasoned adult, it’s a satisfying read that has something for everyone. Be that quirky characters who might not be what they seem, a journey artfully woven through a multitude of different settings, or well-built characters and relationships alike, you can’t help but root for Boone as he tries to save New York.
