I was interested in the characters' different backgrounds, so I picked this book.
I will consider reading another book by this author.
Thanks for your comment.

Same! But those parts made me pause for a moment.
Sometimes I wanted to skip them.

The book seemed related to Kalayla's story, so I mentioned it here. Good thing I read it this year, so everything is still fresh.

I won't consider the ending with Clarence a cliffhanger. The plot just didn't meet my expectations on what should be done with him.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Clarence is my least favorite character, so I wanted him dealt with accordingly.
I agree that it was disappointing.
Thanks for sharing your sentiments.

I really loved this book while reading it. It was a great book. I loved how it had sensitive topics like abuse and domestic violence as well as racism. It was a great book.

I think you will enjoy more of Woodson's book.
She wrote If You Come Softly .
It's clear of those triggers.

Deaths, friendships, reconciliations, generational family ties, hopes, dreams, and regrets. I have read this one too, and the plot affected me in much the same way. Thank you for sharing your insightful analysis here!

In Goodreads, it's shelved in Young Adult, Romance, Contemporary, and Realistic Fiction

Here's the synopsis:

Both Elisha (Ellie) and Jeremiah (Miah) attend Percy Academy, a private school where neither quite fits in. Ellie is wrestling with family demons, and Miah is one of the few African American students. The two of them find each other, and fall in love -- but they are hesitant to share their newfound happiness with their friends and families, who will not understand. At the end, life makes the brutal choice for them.

At first I thought this would be a very challenging read, but I had fun reading the story.
