In We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies, we first set foot in this marvelous country with Galen, an immigrant from the war-ridden Land of the Princes, who just inherited a forgery in Voulhire from his distant great uncle. Then we meet Wilhelm, king of this great land, who must ensure the well being of the kingdom — even if it means lying to his people for their own protection. Leaving the capital, we then travel to a small city by the sea, where Lord Eldus along with his family has the considerable task of bring prosperity and safety to people who suffered unimaginable things at the hands of the latest two lords, all of this while secretly supervising the captivity of the most dangerous mage in the country. These and many other characters and conflicts are introduced throughout the first volume of a six books series worth reading.

Matthew Tysz is an amazing storyteller, and my favorite aspect of his work is how easy it is to visualize the scenes while they’re happening. His writing is fluid and full of details that only helps the reader’s immersion, without being tiresome. Aside from this, the author also comes up with creative ways to blend modern technologies and sciences into a magical world, and approaches difficult subjects with seriousness and sensibility.

In my first contact with Tysz writing it is visible how much thought and effort was put into this amazing world. The only possible improvement, in my opinion, would be a better time reference so the reader doesn’t get lost with the constant change of points of view.

The edition work was well done, with no noticeable mistakes and nice extra content, such as a map of Voulhire and a glossary of terms and concepts for a better understanding of the new universe. Additionally, I leave here a warning to prospect readers that this narrative touches subjects such as pedophilia and rape. There are no details nor anything explicit, but mentions are made and it may cause some discomfort in some readers.

The book is listed as a young adult novel, but I believe many adults might enjoy it too. For those anxiously awaiting for the next books on A Song of Ice and Fire series, this might be a good saga to pass the time, with similar format and the good old political drama and a great kingdom’s history and fate to immerse into. My rating is 4 out of 4 stars. Lovers of historical fiction, adventure and fantasy, I recommend this book for you.
