[Following is a volunteer review of "Superbugs" by Tayma Tameem.]
Lily is the main character in Superbugs by Tayma Tameem. This takes place in a future environment, with little resources and a hostile government. The government has been experimenting on innocent people trying to find cures for the outbreaking viruses. As Lily is fighting to survive, she happens to stumble upon a fugitive who the government is after. It turns out this 'fugitive' is a young pregnant girl who was able to escape from the authorities torture. Lily knows that sending her back would most likely get her killed, so she decides to hide her from the government. By doing this, she is endangering her entire building and risking more lives than necessary. No matter how many threats and challenges arise, Lily keeps fighting for what's right till the end.
In this futuristic book, society is barbaric and cruel, making one like Lily rare. By showing us what might happen if we turn cold-hearted, it pushes us to be hopeful and compassionate. I enjoyed how the plot was relatable, to some of the problems we face today. By signifing real world events, such as Covid-19, it motivates us to be prepared through struggling times. When looking at how little supplies they get, it helps us be thankful for what we have. I like how their actions sublty symbolized many important lessons. It was a good experience trying to figure out what they stood for.
I felt disappointed at most of the characters violence. I understand that their world was supposed to be tough, but I didn't like how even the main characters at times, seemed to enjoy the violence. It made them feel unemotional and inhuman, making the book sometimes seem scripted and robotic. The characters had a lack of imagination and many unlikable traits, which made the story predictable. When it comes to the characters I felt like the author could've been a bit more creative, but otherwise it was a pretty good book.
If you cannot handle violence than this book is probably not for you. It would be more enjoyed by teenagers and young adults. The scenes can be somewhat inappropriate at times, so I recommend it for more enhanced readers. It had few profane words and I couldn't find any editing mistakes. The words were throughly organized.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the well written plot. I would've given it more, but I feel like the characters need more work. Overall, Superbugs was put together nicely. I'm looking forward to seeing better advancements on the next book.
