We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a wonderful science fiction novel which is the first book within a series and serves as an introduction into a universe that exist out of two worlds; the Cosmos (Physical World) and the Caromentis (Magical World). This book takes you on a journey that are rich in cultural diversity, economical changes, political power, and magical aspects within the Cosmos that forms a link to the Caromentis.

The first few chapters give the reader an insight of the history of the different nations and then begins to unfold a story of multiple characters and how they experience, survive, and thrive within these worlds.

Matthew Tysz has the extraordinary ability to write in a descriptive manner that allows the reader to imagine the worlds and feel part of the story. During the first two pages he describes a war scene where Meldorath, a mage, walks into a castle and overtakes the current lord of Hillport, during this chapter I experience the chaos of the scene unfolding. This sets off a story line where there is great poverty in the Land of Princes due to years of war and Galen Bray, thanks to his great uncle's dying wish, escapes to Voulhire to take over his business and lead a better life.

During Galen Bray's journey in Voulhire, Matthew Tysz introduces other main characters that plays a significant role in the Golden Age of Voulhire and sets a series of events into place that will alter the political stability and the unity on which Voulhire prides themselves as a nation. In this book you will find multiple aspects such as abuse of power, humility, divided unification, curiosity, and revenge.

The use of titles per chapter made it quite easy to follow the story of each character and event. It will be helpful to have had a table of contents, this way I would have known that there was a reference guide at the beginning of the book instead of discovering it when I reached the end.

The only negative aspect was that sometimes a paragraph will end and begin in the middle of a sentence. I only picked up one typo at the end in the reference guide. However, this did not have a negative effect on my reading experience or understanding of the storyline.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars and will recommend this book to anyone that enjoys science fiction with an intriguing story line. Although this is a short, easy-to-read book, it ends with a cliff hanger leaving you with suspense and expectation for the next book in the series. I would not suggest this book to a reader that is not intending on reading the full series. I on the other hand cannot wait to read the rest of the series and discover what the story holds for each of the characters and ultimately Voulhire.
