We Are Voulhire: Someone Else's End by Matthew Tysz

3 out of 4 stars.

This novel is a magic fantasy novel aimed at young adults. It's 132 pages long and is the third in the "We Are Voulhire" series.

The story centres around an important court case. King Wilhelm is deciding whether Voulhire should rescue people from the Lands of the Princes, a country which has been torn by civil war for years under the influence of the Emperor of Lullabies, an immensely powerful entity which has been causing the war.

Many citizens are in favour of bringing over the war refugees since Voulhire has enough room, but unfortunately other citizens are afraid that this will attract the attention of the Emperor of Lullabies. King Wilhelm holds court on this case in spite of various threats to his life.

Then, there is a devastating attack on the city of Soulhire and other towns, and in the background, a lot of political intrigue by members of the court trying to take advantage of the new situation. Meanwhile, the Riva Rohavi are also gaining more power and planning to take over...

This is an enjoyable book, written in a compelling and easy-to-understand style. The book also includes moderate profanity (the f-bomb is dropped from time to time).

Although a sword and sorcery type of story, there is also a Lovecraftian influence which adds more depth and danger to the story, and which integrates well with its other influences.

The book includes a map in the front and a glossary at the back, which is a nice touch, and a reference to classic fantasy and young adult novels. There's also a website link for further information.

The book has an interesting, unusual structure. The chapters are not numbered, instead, each chapter has the name of the main character who is experiencing that part of the story, which is told from their point of view. Sometimes the chapter is titled for the location of the action.

The chapters become shorter and more intense during the action sequences, which is a very effective use of tempo, and the plot includes a nice balance between world-changing battle scenes and background scheming between various characters.

Although I'm a newcomer to the series I was able to dive in to the third volume and understand what was going on. There's a nice sense of background history to the story and good descriptions of action sequences and the beauty of the countryside and the city of Soulhire.

I wanted to give the book 4 out of 4 stars, but unfortunately, there are a fair amount of errors in the text. The book would benefit from more thorough editing.

I would recommend this book to young adults and older who enjoy rousing dark fantasy stories and who also don't mind some profanity.
