We are Vouhire: The Fires Of Virko by Mathew Tysz
This is the second book in the We are Voulhire series. The main character in this book is still Galen Bray just as in the first book but unlike in the first book where the attention was on the Hillport town of Vouhire this book now focuses on the city of Magnum Caelum which is an important city in the land of Voulhire. The people of Magnum Caelum are pushing for a capitalist community as they are convinced that handing the power over to the entrepreneurs and the merchants will improve their way of living. At the helm of this movement is Lord Venden who believes that the old ways of ruling no longer benefit Virko as much.

Lord Venden loved his city and he always did his best to ensure that Virko prospered right down to his deathbed. He worked tirelessly to ensure that his people had the best and he truly believed that a capitalist community would ensure the wellness of his people and their continuity. Of course, as with any new agenda being pushed in such an old-fashioned government, his ideas were met with some backlash from the people who did not want Virko to become a capitalist community and sought to destroy the idea.

Galen and his two friends Rowan and Demetrius arrive in Virko to find themselves in yet another series of risky events with all the political tension and power plays. Lord Venden who is a dying man asks them to look after his son Hans Hrelek. In their quest to help him they encounter a series of events that make for an interesting storyline.

The book is filled with strong themes such as politics, power, death, and even dark magic. On the lighter side, it also has themes like friendships, love, and loyalty. The story is well written from start to finish. Although it was a bit slow in the beginning things started picking up soon after. I found the story to be well-paced and things had a logical timeline.

I liked the various twists and turns in the book that never saw coming. It was action-packed and there was never a dull moment in the story. I liked how the author introduced each chapter its an interesting change from a lot of other books with the typical introduction of each chapter in most other books. The author also manages to describe situations vividly and it makes it easier to picture the events in my head. I did not dislike anything about this book however I felt that it was a bit less action-packed than the first book in the series. Regardless, the author managed to keep me interested throughout the whole story right up to the end.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 as it seems to be professionally edited. I also genuinely enjoyed reading this. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good fantasy novel with a hint of black magic.
