[Following is a volunteer review of "Zona: The Forbidden Land" by Fred G. Baker.]
Zona: The Forbidden Land by Fred G. Baker takes place in Russia. Dr. Grant Taylor's Uncle Randall never returned from his expedition to Zona. He left Grant his journals that left clues only he could figure out regarding the expedition. Grant, along with people he doesn't trust, traveled to Zona to rescue Uncle Randall and a few other scientists that may have survived. Upon arriving in Zona, they notice unusual animals and plants. Grant and the others fight for their survival. Who survives? And do they find Uncle Randall and the other scientists?
I'm rating this book 4 out of 4 stars because there was never a dull moment and kept me engaged throughout the entire book. There weren't any typos or grammatical errors either. There is some profanity and minor erotica. There are also some gory parts. It didn't bother me at all, but might bother others. I'll probably end up purchasing a hard copy to keep in my library at home.
I usually stick with thrillers and mystery genres, but decided to go out of my comfort zone and read a science-fiction novel. I never expected to love a book in this genre. I absolutely hate science, but Zona: The Forbidden Land has some mystery to it, and the science was all about animals and plants, so I think that's why I was able to enjoy the story so much. I would say the intended audience would be for people who enjoy mysteries and also those who enjoy science, animals, and adventure.
My favorite part was the connection Grant had with the dire wolf. I loved every single scene with the dire wolves. My least favorite thing about the book was that it was a little slow in the beginning while building character development. I wish there were more action earlier on instead of waiting until chapter 15.
I highly recommend this book. I really hope they make a movie, too. The dire wolves are amazing, the saber tooth lions are terrifying, and the story line is awesome. I even loved the way he describes all of the unusual plants and I'd like to be able to see them. I would love to just see Zona in general. One of my favorite things is to comapare books to the movie to see if they follow the story line, and I also like to see if it's how I had imagined it. I enjoyed the ending, even though it was left with a cliffhanger. I'm really hoping Fred G. Baker is writing a second book! I'd definitely purchase that one as well.
