Book Review: Hands Across the Sea

Hands Across the Sea written by Brian Cook depicts the daily occurrences of the ‘Agency’. The Agency, known as the Office of the Sheriff was resourced with colorful law enforcement characters of the County. These characters are Commanders, Sergeants, Sheriffs and Assistant Sheriffs. The story line explodes in graphical and comedic undertones of promotions and the ceremonies that follows, disaffection toward to the selection process for promotions, the personal lives and interpersonal exchanges of these law enforcers (family squabbles, traditions and expectations), the verbal and non-verbal ques, the attitudes and response that are engendered from those ques and the changing of the guard which includes the whole retirement gamut. The housed legacies from the changing of the guard is designed for the Agency’s continuity.

Brian aptly and scholarly outlines the definition of leaders and leadership. I like his definitions. These definitions resounded well with me. He stated that, ‘leaders allow their staff to solve problems while employing their own brand of proficiency and work ethic, while following directions.’ He further stated that, ‘the overall strength of chains begins and ends with its leader,’ Excellent! I appreciate such brilliancy. This will assist with my own understanding of leadership and will strengthen my leadership skills that are currently being honed. I would recommend this book to my colleagues who are middle managers, and aspiring managers as it contains researched and detailed information on leadership and management.

Brian is an excellent writer, his play on words explodes in classical and imaginative clearance. Inspiration for the Hands Across the Sea evolved from an eyebrow-raising situation in ‘olden days’ department that involved spoken and unspoken support and affiliations - a bond easy to make, yet hard to break. A union with strong connections, friends helping friends. I was intrigued by the title of the book, it captivated and captured my attention.

Turning the pages of the book ignited eagerness and excitement. Each scene brought anticipation for the next scene. It was a good read. I was also fascinated with the layout of the content, brilliant concept. Oh my, I did not find any typographical errors in the book.

The Author and Editors did a good job. It was exceptionally written and professionally edited. I kept asking myself if this was a fictional presentation or not. The conversations give the pages of the book life. I truly anticipate part 2, uh, what will happen…. I rate this book 4 stars out of 4 stars. I would not hesitate to place my recommendation at someone’ feet. Good job.
