Tephra rising by K. C. Weston is a book about a post-apocalyptic world in which everything that could possibly go wrong has. Pollution, war, plagues and more have made the world almost unliveable, but there is hope and it is found in the unlikeliest of places. The book follows the story of Cynthia, a soldier turned lawyer who works for the very people she fought against, The alliance. Cynthia is given a once in a lifetime chance to leave the world she despises and go to a new world, a better world, a world where there is only peace. She leaps at the opportunity and our adventure begins.

The book is what I would like to call a slow burn. It doesn’t hook you at the beginning, but as the story progresses you get more into the plot, you learn more about the characters and before you even realise it you're hooked on the book, you are so invested you can’t stop reading. Cynthia is a strong and logical woman which is why she is one of the favourites. She resonates with all human beings as she is what we are thriving to be, strong and brave. Therefore, Cynthia is, without a doubt, a favourite and will continue to be one as her adventure continues.

The only issues that were found in the book were the constant switching from points of view, as well as switching to different periods in time altogether. These switches where necessary as they gave insight into how this new magical world came about as well as the thought processes behind the main antagonists in the story. While it was necessary, these swift period and point of view changes made it hard to follow the story.

Overall, the book was a good read, from start to finish it made me think and engage with the story. Even though some of the nuances of the book frustrated me, such as the point of view flipping and the change of time-period, I enjoyed reading the book. I would recommend this book to all readers who enjoy dystopian/ post-apocalyptic worlds. I rate this book a good 3 out of 4
