[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Mathew Tysz is the first book of We are Voulhire fantasy series. The plot of the novel is built in the Kingdom of Voulhire. The novel introduces us to Galen Bray, a young man, who is from the Land of the Princes. He has received word that his uncle, a merchant in Magnum Caelum, passed away and named him as the sole heir to his uncle's property.
There was once a king who gave each of his four sons an island to rule after he had realized their intentions to overthrow him. The small islands were beautiful and prosperous. However, the four princes competing to be heirs of their father's empire fueled the start of civil wars in the Land of the Princes. Living in any of the islands ruled by the princes would mean death by the sword or hunger. Galen receives papers and instructions from his uncle about how he would manage his property and businesses. He immediately sets off for the Kingdom of Voulhire. He arrives at a small town called Magnum Caelum. He is welcomed by the Mayor then later meets Rowan, a young man, who works for a financial firm in Soulhire; Rowan is his uncle's executor. There is more that awaits Galen in this Kingdom. You will have to read to find out.
The author has actively engaged its characters by letting them narrate the story from their own perspectives. This style enables the reader to connect with the characters, therefore, making it easy to connect with whatever they are going through. Moreover, Mathew's use of more than one protagonist has enabled him to develop the plot from various story-lines.
The factor that I liked most in the book is Mathew's use of simple language to develop the plot. The words were easy to read and understand. I did not like the lack of descriptive language in describing the events in the novel. The Author would have described the events more, thus making the story more interesting. Moreover, I disliked the poor character development. I ended up feeling that the potential of the characters was not fully exploited.
I believe that the text was exceptionally edited as I did not find any grammatical errors that interfered with my enjoyment of the novel. I, therefore, rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Mathew Tysz three out of four stars , a star was deducted because of the poor character development; I feel that the author would have done more. I recommend the book to both young and adult readers, who are interested in fantasy stories of medieval kingdoms.
