“It’s not what you are born with, it’s what you do with that.” This is a profound truth that we often don’t want to hear because it is easier to shift the blame, rather than to admit to our shortcomings.

The secrets to living a fantastic life by Dr. Allen Lycka and Harriet Tinka challenges us to get up and push through the difficult times to reach success. “Winners don’t use excuses, they find solutions.” They not only challenge but also endeavors to equip their readers with the necessary tools to be able to reach the success that often eludes us.

Both of the authors have suffered greatly and overcome immense odds to reach the success that they now enjoy. They start of the book by sharing their experiences and the history behind how they came to write the book.

The 13 golden pearls that they share form a foundation that, if you build on it, will enable you to overcome anything that life throws at you. Not surprisingly, the first pearl is love. But they take it a step further and explain the different kinds of love, as well as the importance of each.

They also talk a lot about the difficulties and challenges behind the implementation of each pearl. “Without struggles, we never grow and never get stronger.” The entire book is filled with encouragement at the hand of examples from different people who took difficult circumstances and turned it into victory and success.

The book is written as a dialog with a lot of inspirational quotes added in at appropriate times. Reading the book feels as if you are part of a conversation and that added a very personal touch. Each pearl is not just given, Dr. Allen and Harriet makes each one personal, by sharing what the specific pearl meant for them in their own lives and how they implement it daily.

It will be very difficult to pick my most favorite part of the book because it will be the entire book! Each pearl comes with its own story and quote that makes that pearl stand out. I think it was brilliantly done because the pearl you are currently reading about takes the forefront in your mind until you read the next one.

There is nothing about the book itself that I disliked, I downloaded it as an e-pub and my copy had some spacing issues, with the page numbers being inserted in the middle of a sentence. That made for some challenging reading and constantly not being sure what page number I was on. But I did look at the sample on Amazon and the Kindle version does not have the same issues, so I did not deduct any points for the issues I had as they are limited to the e-pub version of this book. “One cannot expect a perfect life but must appreciate moments of beauty interspersed among tragedy.”

I gladly give this book 4 out of 4. The book was well written and very well edited, it is suitable for any audience but those who want to achieve or overcome something will gain the most value from reading this book. I leave you with one last quote: “Being vulnerable is neither bad nor good, but without it, victory cannot be achieved.”

:tiphat: I like the quote which states that 'winners don't give excuses but find solutions.' I agree with the author, we ought to be problem solvers and not creators.

Thank you for the great review! This book seems to offer beneficial advice that a lot of people could use and I like the use of the 'pearls' as deliverance of the advice.
