Review by ritah -- How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy
How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader by M. Curtis McCoy is a well-written book with invaluable information on how to succeed in life. The author shares his life experiences, challenges, and hard lessons of both failure and success. In addition, the book includes stories of success, failure, and inspiration from highly successful people from different walks of life and industries.
In the beginning, the book highlights the story of the author from when he was a young boy with dreams of becoming an entrepreneur to when he made good on his ambitions and finally made it happen. By the age of twenty-seven, Mr. McCoy saw great success owning several businesses in different industries! Unfortunately, his world turned upside down when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. He not only lost his ability to live independently but also his memory of little things to major things relating to his research and businesses. Uncertainty loomed over whether he would survive or not, as oncologists predicted he only had about three months left to live. One thing the author was sure of is if he survived, he would build another successful business. And this he did!
This is one of those books that turned out to be way better than I had anticipated. I already had a feeling that it would be good based on the first few pages, but I didn’t know how good. This is a book that I’m happy I chose to read and was well worth the time.
Through one of the interview questions, the author shared a significant story that showed how attitude and outlook on life can impact your situation in life. The author then went on to share ideas, truths, and advice that will either affirm and/or challenge your thought process in the pursuit of success.
One of the best elements of this book (aside from the great advice and wealth of information) is the interview style the author used to present various lessons and viewpoints held by various successful leaders. This was refreshing and impactful; it was great to learn from different world leaders at once. And although all the leaders were asked the same questions, the answers weren’t always the same. Thus, I was able to draw shared truths from repeated sentiments and gain greater insight from different answers.
The author’s writing style and book arrangement made for a quick and easy yet thought-provoking read. After every interview, the author often interjected with applicable, useful advice that’s bound to set readers up for success. This approach was great; it added so much more value and offered moments of reprieve from the question and answer style.
There’s not much that I didn’t like about this book. The only comments I have is that even though those interviewed went off on a tangent sometimes (note: some people may not appreciate this), I still found value in the extra information shared. The other is that the thoughts on God/spirituality can be isolating to people who don’t subscribe to them. And finally, when it comes to poverty as a whole, I don’t think the answer is always so simple. I personally don’t like it when people make blanket statements, especially on issues that affect others significantly. While the author did not directly say, “poverty is a choice,” it seemed to be implied at times, but that’s just my assessment.
Nevertheless, this is an immensely great read that I plan to read again. The book also appeared to be professionally edited. It would be best suited to anyone looking to change his/her life and, of course, aspiring entrepreneurs and leaders. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I award it a full star because it offers excellent advice on leadership and success.
