Review by AntonelaMaria -- Sandra Eden's War by Michael Low
Sandra Eden's War by Mike Low is a short historical fiction book set in the World War II era.
The story follows Sandra Eden as she is parachuted into France. She has the task of helping the freeing of German-occupied France. The pilot who witnesses her landing presumes Sandra to be dead. But she escapes death as she lands on a tall tree. They send a new agent to replace Sandra. As a British Special Operations Executive (SOE) agent, Sandra is brave and fearless. Even though this is a fictional take on war times just weeks before D-Day, it gives a realistic take on it.
My favorite part of this book is that it has a female narrator. I don’t see enough war stories with a strong female as a protagonist and center of the storyline, without that being a romance novel. So, this was a welcomed occurrence. I liked how she was portrayed in this book too. Sandra is a strong, brave, competent woman doing her job. Considering the fact of how well known is the subject of world wars, I found this book to be a novelty.
Unfortunately, none of the characters became more fleshed out as the book went on. The character development was lacking. The premise of the story intrigued me and felt like the author did an amazing job of giving out information for the reader to want to learn more. I wasn’t bored reading this. But the ending was also unsettled because it was so sudden. Maybe that is the curse of shorter books, that I always feel I missed something more.
I need to point out I didn’t find any grammatical errors in this book. It is edited exceptionally well. However, this book was very flat with both characters and storyline. Sadly, it is a very forgettable read. Besides female lead, nothing stood out. I would rate this book with three out of four stars. I can’t rate it as a perfect score for all the reasons already mentioned, but it is a solid read that doesn’t deserve a lower rating.
I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy brief war stories. Also, all historical readers will find this book enjoyable. If you are looking for strong female representation, you will not be disappointed either. There are only minor profanities and no erotic scenes, which makes it a suitable read for younger audiences. I am curious about other books by this author.
