The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles is a fiction book that features love, family and crime. It’s a book full of intrigues. The story revolves around love and passion, family drama, religion and politics.

Lucy is a successful lawyer. She marries Luke who is ocular surgeon working for her father. They have a daughter Jennifer, who was raised mainly by the nanny and her aunt Elizabeth, Lucy’s sister. Lucy begins an affair with one of her clients, a TV preacher Reverend Bain. Blinded by the passion she feels for him, Lucy abandons her family and career to follow him to Africa. After some time she realize Reverend Bain is not what she wanted him to be. Lucy is coming back home. She is broke and have to face shame and rejection from her family. Desperate to start over her life, Lucy moves to California where she works as advisor to a woman running for the Congress. Job didn't end well and Lucy got fired. Her now ex-husband Luke starts relationship with her sister Elizabeth. Her parents divorced. Her daughter dies.

There was a lot of going on in this book. I would prefer more focus, as the story has a lot of subplots. The writer was leading the story into different directions. It started with a crime, then become romance and end up with drama. The writer includes too many medical facts which are not contributing to the story. Also, part when Lucy works for the Congress candidate is not relevant for the story, except the part where she starts relationship with her fellow colleague.

The main character Lucy is not likable at all. She is selfish, success-driven, unhappy person who makes bad life-decisions. Even though she is smart and beautiful, she has a low self-esteem. She is not capable of true love. Opposite of her is her sister Elizabeth, who is warm and caring person, but her character is very boring. Luke is portrayed as highly-ethical with professional integrity, yet very shallow when it comes to emotions. This book didn’t move me. Based on the events in this book there should be tears, but I just didn’t feel any connection to the characters.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars because I didn’t feel connection with any of the characters. This book looked so promising when I read the synopsis. The book doesn’t contain any profanity and sex scenes are not explicit.
