Amidst Alien Stars by Clayton Graham
A Book Review by Kanyua Nduthu
Amidst Alien Stars is a well written science fiction examining future human exploits and whether there can exist new habitat or a new form of life should earth become inhabitable. The author weaves a web of mystery as humans interact and get abducted by aliens in a military base in Australia.
A mother and her son find themselves captives of an alien race, Glieze. Together with others, they are being used to produce hybrids between the alien race and Gliezans. This would bring a more tolerant species to help in exploration of the universe for better existence and relationships with other beings.
The attack, which takes place in Eucla in Australia, leaves a massacre in which a senior military man and a researcher are killed. The research center, Milijun is completely destroyed.
In Glieze, Laura and Jason face psychological turmoil. They don’t know why they were abducted since the Gliezans are not transparent regarding their mission. What is clear though is the fact that they together with others are being used to develop hybrids between humans and the aliens, their captors, through an advanced technology. It is obvious, the technology of the aliens is more advanced than that on earth. Will they be allowed to go back home?
Since the Gliezans are reluctant to reveal their true intentions, Laura and Jason decide to attempt an escape on their own which lands Laura into trouble after she is abducted by a rival Gliezan subtribe, by name Gerb. Gerb and Rbuzen have been enemies in Glieze for ages. Jason is forced to go and rescue his mother and this triggers a disastrous clash between the tribes of the Glieze which leaves the planet completely destroyed. The survivors escape to Mars, including Laura and Jason.
What I like about the book is how Graham blends human experience with the fictitious alien world to display a complete new view of existence. The way he marries time travel with technology, the robotics as brilliant as RNasia and the mysterious adaptations as those in Glieze. His used of vivid description of Glieze leaves the read with clear mental images you would think it exists in reality.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 and recommend it for science fiction enthusiasts. It is full of mystery and very refreshing.
