[Following is a volunteer review of "Burn Zones" by Jorge P. Newbery.]
Burn Zones: playing life's bad hands is an autobiographical novel by Jorge P. Newbery. The story reads very smoothly, and is very intriguing from the beginning. I found myself picturing what I was like at age 7, 11, 13, and 17 as I followed story. As I read this story, I found Jorge has a propensity for life, one which most of us lack. His values and respect for people are what caught me off guard in this book. I wasn't expecting to read about a person who could imagine something and get it done, even when others around him didn't believe he could. I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the life of Jorge P. Newbery.
In the book, the author tells us of his life in his parents' home in Los Angeles in the late 1980s. He was determined at the age of 7 to succeed on his own. He describes how he started delivering newspapers, to ice cream, to starting his own record company at the age of 17. It is clear he really loved his record label, as he writes of the times he spent with various punk bands in the late 1980's- early 1990's. He also mentions how supportive his family was of his ventures, which seem to have made all of the differences in his life. I felt particularly interested in this part, as I share an interest in some of the bands he mentions. I think having a common interest with the author made this story more captivating, but would still recommend to readers who do not share an interest in the music scene.
Following the successes of his life thus far, he finds himself amassing 4000 troubled rental buildings across the U.S.A. and turning them into profitable investments. A natural disaster cost him everything and left him 26 million dollars in debt. It was this part of the story that proved to me the author was no average Joe. Most people would throw in the towel at that point, but he was able to dig himself out. The determination and ability to pick himself up was astounding. It's one of those books that gave me hope for myself again.
I enjoyed how he was able to tell his story of great success and even greater losses, without using vulgar language, sexual references, or violence to enhance the story. It is a straight forward read, about a truly unique and humble individual. His values are unfortunately a scarcity in today's world, which made this book so much more enjoyable to experience.
The book is authored in the first person, and is heart-felt, inspirational, and emotional. The book is quick 244 pages, and picks up more in the second half. I think the straight-forward writing style makes it more enjoyable to read.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4. I highly recommend to adults questioning their next move in life, or just looking for a good read. Burn Zones without question is a quality book.
