Burn Zones: Playing Life’s Bad Hands is an autobiography that covers the expanse of Jorge P. Newberry’s life and his struggles. As we open the book, we are encountered by a tremendously ambitious boy who starts working by delivering newspapers in the neighborhood. The boy then grows and buys himself an ice-cream machine, owning a business at a very young age. The boy then develops an interest in the music industry, achieving the goal he had set his mind on. He moves forward to put out the fire of passion burning inside him from becoming an elite cyclist, to a mortgage owner. As he faces several ups and downs in life, he, in the end, comes out better and stronger than ever.

The narrative is exceptionally engaging for the reader. The author employs strong imagery and paints every scenario with great detail. Every new endeavor the author mounts upon is backed up by great detail of information to aid the reader for complete understanding. Nowhere in the book are we left with an incomplete story, lack of emotional buildup, or loopholes. The author involves the reader in every step of the way, sprinkling life-changing lessons and teachings.

The author also included the injustices faced by the black community and provides an enlightening scenario that inculcates a feeling of treating everyone with justice. He also shows how a very strong and established man can be crushed by politics that involve higher authorities. These matters are presented without much complexity and keep the reader from even blinking an eye.

The author also includes every character that ever had an impact on him, and paints their personality with the realistic uniqueness that exists in real life. This not only made the book much more interesting but also very much believable. Another admirable thing about the story was how the author never forgot to add “burn-zone” every step of the way, reminding the reader of the true nature and idea of the book. At the end of the story, the author talks about how the solution that he struggled to find throughout his struggles was none other than himself.

This book is an exceptionally crafted narrative, which provides you with inspirational, understandable, imaginable, and relatable lessons. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The writing style of the author was straightforward and simple, and the book was professionally edited. Offensive language can be observed here and there throughout the book. Although there is no explicit scene, there is a visit to a strip club and therefore I believe children below 16 would require parental guidance. People who enjoy and appreciate autobiographies will love to read this book.
