Burn Zones: Playing Life's Bad Hands by Jorge P. Newbery is an autobiography that tells the story of a young man’s journey to riches and his journey out of debts. An intriguing book that details the struggles and successes in the life of the author.

It tells us the story of his life from a boy to his 50s. It includes personal stories and gives us glimpses into his life and growth as an individual. We follow Jorge in this book from his first business at 8 years old as a newspaper delivery boy. From there he moves on to become an icecream seller, recording rock bands and building a record company. He talked about his decision to quit high school, his cycling career, his career in real estate and all his many pursuits. He was very open about his mistakes, lessons, and experiences. He shared with how he played life’s bad hands, lost everything and emerged over $26million in debt.

According to the author, "burn zones" are short periods of extraordinary effort that separated the winners and losers. Everyone’s life is full of burn zones, which test the limits of their bodies and minds. Throughout the book, he shared all the burn zones he experienced and how he overcame them. He gave essence to this book by showing us how he went through troubles and tribulations that life served him and coming out of the burn zone as a winner.

I liked how real and detailed the book was. He did not hold back on his sharing his experiences and life lessons. He did not shy away from detailing how he got himself into debt and how he came out of it. He shared the decisions he made that brought about remarkable results and the bad decisions that brought about failures. I also liked how he included images in the book to help us picture more vividly the story he was sharing with us.

I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. This is because the book is very organized, relatable and well written. The author wrote in a simple style that as easy to understand and read. It was also professionally edited, as I did not notice any spelling or grammatical errors. He did a great job of sharing his life story with the reader. Lovers of memoirs and anyone struggling with life’s difficulties will benefit from reading this book. Readers interested in business books will also enjoy reading this book.
