[Following is a volunteer review of "Burn Zones" by Jorge P. Newbery.]
I enjoyed the book, Burn Zones: Playing Life’s Bad Hands by Jorge P. Newbery. This book begins with an autobiography of a young Hispanic man who rose from poverty as a young boy to an Olympian to becoming a successful entrepreneur and businessman later on in life. He describes his perseverance through physical and financial challenges throughout life. I give it 4 out of 4 stars.
I found the book inspiring; this was one of the elements I enjoyed most. The author was persistent in his endeavors. He started his first business at age 11 with the support of his family; moving on from there to pursue ever larger and more complex business endeavors. I did not appreciate the foul language splattered throughout the book, but this may reflect the author’s speech pattern. After the first five times profanity was used, I stopped counting. It is frequent.
I found no spelling errors in this book. It appeared professionally edited and there are detailed footnotes. The author references his experiences with courts and being sued, his training in real estate, and cites his work with the Huffington Post (where he is currently a regular contributor). He also raced road bikes in national & international competitions (including the 1988 Olympic Trials) in addition to running in marathons and ultra-marathons.
The author does an excellent job of engaging the reader in his story. He is brutally honest in sharing his biggest successes and deepest failures. It is an intriguing read.
I feel this book would be particularly relevant for anyone facing hard times yet wants to strive for success. Individuals who are religious may not like this book because of the foul language throughout the autobiography. I also do not think it is appropriate for children or teens. However, it is relevant for a young adult beginning a career, especially when facing difficult times.
