[Following is a volunteer review of "Burn Zones" by Jorge P. Newbery.]
Burn zones: Playing Life’s Bad Hands by Jorge.P. Newbery is an autobiography about his life and story of survival. Mr. Newbery started his own ice-cream business at 11 and convinced his parents to drop out of school when he was only 16 to start his own record label soon after. He describes difficult and stressful times in life as ‘Burn Zones’ which test the limits of our bodies and minds. Staying relaxed and enduring the pain until the pace slows is the authors advice to life. He raced bicycles alongside some of the best in the world and took on America’s most troubled buildings and transformed them into assets to benefit all, but one natural disaster erased everything. He was maligned, publicly shamed and financially gutted. He had entered the most difficult ‘Burn Zone’ of his life. Pick up a copy of the book to know if and how he got through this difficult time! What an amazing ride Mr Newbery has taken me on with his tremendous story. Burn Zones is a book that I enthusiastically recommend to older young adults who enjoy autobiographies and can handle some technical financial aspects while enjoying a thoroughly motivating story.
One of the things I most like about this book was the fact that the author always gave details into each phase of his life. I’m sure this is the best approach because it allows us to know several important characteristics of Mr. Newbery. The invaluable lessons and testimonies of his father, the true belief in the fact that ‘if you treat people well, they often do the same’ make the book an appealing read.
One of things I dislike about this book is the emphasis on technicalities in the middle chapters. It got a bit slow for me. There is a lot of description of different law enforcement characters and legal details which is difficult to keep up with. It was a slow draw to me and I seemed to be losing interest. However, once I got past those particular pages, I was hooked again.
Another very interesting part of the book is how the writer ends it. He is very objective in mentioning that not all his experiences have been happy but he has learned to play life’s bad hands. He strongly motivates the readers to enter their ‘Burn Zones’ and test their limits.
The book is very well edited. There is a couple of insults here and there but they keep you attached to the emotion of the story, which I personally didn’t mind, so that just added to my overall enjoyment of the book.
Taking all my likes and dislikes into consideration, I would probably give this book a rating of 3.5 out of 4 stars, but since half stars aren’t an option here, I will go ahead and round it up to four out of four stars. It is an exciting and fascinating book. I found myself loving this book and ready to enter ‘My Burn Zone’.
