[Following is a volunteer review of "The Reel Sisters" by Michelle Cummings.]
The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings is one of a kind novel that centers around 5 women: Sophie, Veronica, Amanda, Rose, and Melody, who bond through fly fishing. Their love for the latter helps them form the ultimate friendship: an everlasting one.
In the beginning, the book serves to introduce us to the basics of fly fishing with a funny pun:
There’s a constant switch between these five characters story-wise, which serves to assist the reader not only in forming an accurate idea of each one’s character but also in seeing the same situation from 5 different points of view.
What’s intriguing about this novel is how one made the other fall in love with fly fishing, starting with Rose who has been fly fishing ever since childhood, and ending with Melody, who would have never made it out to be a hobby had it not been for the four ladies. With the former’s cabin being the perfect fly fishing headquarters, girls’ weekend has become a ritual for all of them. Moreover, we also get to take peek at each one’s life outside those cabin getaways.
In addition to the friendship theme, there’s also a notable dose of romance and drama, not mentioning the element of unexpectedness, chiefly near the end. I really liked how the author combined those themes rather than focusing on one of them. It felt like a refreshing change as I’m used to books that focus on one or the other. I also liked the diversity present in the main characters’ personalities as the reader may definitely relate to one of them. In my case, it was Veronica, especially when she said:
In light of the above, I would have rated this book 4 stars, but I’m afraid that the number of grammatical errors and typos which exceeds 10, although it doesn’t lead me to believe that this book wasn’t professionally edited, warrants a star deduction. Therefore I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
This book contains non-borderline profanity so readers who are uncomfortable with the such may enjoy the book less than I did; for those who can overlook it though, specifically those who are looking for a novel that presents a realistic combination of friendship and romance, it is worth checking out.

I may point out that I found the pun in the title to be very artistic and alluring; it sums up the story thoroughly.There are times I feel like I’m doing what I have to do and not what I want to do, like I have an image to uphold yet I’m doing it for all the wrong reasons.
