[Following is a volunteer review of "Opaque" by Calix Leigh-Reign.]
Opaque is a young adult novel written by Calix Leigh-Reign. It takes place in Piure, California. It's the main character, Adam, who is facing inner turmoil and disdain towards his family as well as the community Piure. However, all of these changes once he meets and falls in love with an Afro-Russian American girl named Carly who had just moved to California from Silver Springs Minnesota. This story showcases how their relationship develops throughout the school year as they both develop more of an understanding of their strengths and their negative attributes.
While looking at the cover of the story, I instantly felt like the story would have a post-apocalyptic tone to it like Divergent or Hunger Games. Although the story isn't set in a post-apocalyptic society, it has a science fiction influence with there being references to characters having superhuman telekinetic powers. With this being said, I would recommend this story to people who enjoyed movies such as the Jumpers, or Marvel superhero movies. I would also recommend this novel to people that enjoyed video games such as inFamous or Life is Strange. Although majority of the story is written in English, it would be even better if you can read in Russian as well.
With regards to the genre, it stays true to what the audience can expect from a young adult novel. For instance, the characters still take part in activities such as going to parties or restaurants. They also have the typical characters found within these stories such as the overbearing jocks, the unlikeable mean girl, the smart girl, and the loner. It also brings about issues where teens grow apart from their parents and develop their own sense of self.
I would give this story 4 out of 4 stars. There is never a dull moment with this story. The author is constantly introducing a new aspect of each character. The characters don't feel one dimensional or useless to the plot of the story. The story is also filled with suspense and some action.
I liked that the author told the story in the lense of both Carly and Adam. My understanding of both characters has grown while reading the story. I didn't maintain any bias or a one-sided explanation of each character. For instance, Adam at first seemed like he was an angsty teenager that was too hard to stay around because he had a hard time controlling his anger. Then at other times, he seemed anti-social with psychological issues. Though because we had the chance to see how Adam's thoughts were processing in the same event, we can understand why he felt angry and distant from society.
