I have always been intrigued by science fiction genres in books, movies, and shows. Lately, I have taken on a huge interest in mutation stories and theories. I often fantasize about these mutations becoming a reality and all of us humans getting superpowers. Calix Leigh- Reign has created this fantasy world for me in this amazing book. Opaque Is the first book in the Scion Saga series. It is about Adam, a teenager who has never fit in. His mother is the only person he regards as a person and the rest of the people are just animals to him. He has been attracted to his mother for the longest time until a new student is introduced to his school. At first, I thought the attraction to his mum is a severe case of Oedipus complex and this drew me further into the book.

The town of Piure, Adam's hometown is simple and normal. Kids go to school and their parents go to work and during the weekends they rest. Adam hates interacting with other people. He is almost always alone looking forward to meeting his mother after school. At first, Adam is a weird teenager, He has no friends, he harbors bad thoughts about people and he is portrayed to have real feelings towards his mom. Carly, the newcomer at his school understands what troubles him but is reluctant to help him at first. Adam is not repulsed by Carly, as much as he does not want to admit his attraction to her, he cannot stop thinking about her. She is the only person who does not appear as an "animal" to him.

Adam's life takes a complete and unexpected turn after he gets into an accident. He learns that he is adopted. He is a descendant of a mutated Russian bloodline that has superpowers. Carly is also a descendant and is aware of her powers. She helps Adam through the discovery of his powers and training.

I loved the character development and vivid descriptions in this book. The language is simple but powerful. It is easy to follow the story-line and get attached to the characters. The vivid descriptions of the scenes opened up my imagination and drew me further into the book. I pictured the fights, the schools and the display of powers. The book is written in the first person making it easy to connect the characters with the challenges they face. It is also endowed with twists and challenges to keep one hooked till the end.

Being the first book in a series, this book is a page-turner and I cannot wait to read the next book. The themes of forgiveness, friendship, family and young love have been explored and developed well to give the reader a satisfactory ending. Fans of young adult, science fiction and teenage romance will enjoy reading this. The book is suitable for young adults and adults as well.

I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. From the proper development of characters to language use, this book will have you asking for more.

This sounds like a very interesting sci-fi novel. I'm glad Adam found Carly as it sounds like he was headed towards a troubled adulthood without her. Thanks for your wonderful review!

Adam sounds like quite an interesting character and not your typical protagonist. I can imagine that this might make the character development you mentioned all the more satisfying. Did you find that Adam's eccentricities made him more or less easy to sympathize with?

Yes, further into the book though after realizing what was causing his odd behavior. I got to say at the beginning you just want to punch him in the face :D

I'm just starting the book now, and I'd say that's pretty accurate. Glad to know it'll get better as I go.

I often really enjoy young adult novels and this one has some aspects that make it seem a little more mature, so this could be a good quick read for me! Thanks for the review, I'll have to check this book out!
