[Following is a volunteer review of "Opaque" by Calix Leigh-Reign.]
Opaque , the first installment in the scion saga by Calix Leigh-Reign is a fictional book about mutated human beings descended from seven families in Russia. These mutated humans have special abilities such as telekinesis, the ability to control fire, the ability to teleport, flying and healing abilities. These special abilities have put the descendants of the seven family lines into danger. Scientists who are intrigued by these abilities track down members of these families and carry out all sorts of torturous experiments on them. Consequently, descendants of the families have hitherto been forced to hide. In this book, which is the first of the trilogy, the descendants have been triggered to step out from hiding and fight back.
The book starts off in a queer and intriguing manner with the main character ‘Adam’ being in love with his mother. The reason for this is however explained later in the book. The author is skillful in using the literary device of suspense to keep the reader’s interest. He is not quick to divulge the mutated or paranormal nature of the lead male character and the lead female character ‘Carly’. What the reader gets for the first ten chapters is a glimpse into the otherworldly nature of these two characters, quickly followed up by scenes dispelling this nature and reinforcing their humanity. This leaves the reader in a state of doubt about the true nature of these characters; the reader is left to guess about their true nature, thereby piquing further interest in the book.
Shrouded in mystery, the book is saddled by so many unexpected twists and turns, thereby leaving the reader clueless as to what might come next. Apart from suspense, Calix Leigh- Reign makes good use of other literary techniques such as flashback and imagery. The language of the book is simple, thereby making it easy to read. The book is written in the third person’s narrative point of view. Images are also included in some chapters of the book to aid the imagination of the reader.
What I like most about this book is the fact that it is not cliché. Having read a lot of fiction about paranormal beings, the story starts to look the same. This book is, however, a breath of fresh air from the normal fictional books about paranormal forces or activities. Apart from the author’s brilliant writing skills, the storyline in itself makes the book unique. The book is professionally edited and throughout the book, I spot only one error. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars despite the fact that I spotted one typographical error. This is because the book is intriguing and entertaining and an absolute thriller. Although I have not read the remaining installments in the saga, this book has the makings of a great movie.
