[Following is a volunteer review of "Are Your Kids Naked Online?" by Chris Good and Lisa Good.]
As a parent, I thought Are Your Kids Naked Online was going to be an important read. I was partially right. Are Your Kids Naked Online is by Chis Good and his wife Lisa. It is a guide for parents who have no or very little experience with the internet in general.
Chris and Lisa are cybersecurity experts. They hammer this into every sentence they write. They also want the reader to be very aware of what Silicon Valley parents do with their children regarding technology. In other words, expect some parent shaming if you pick up this book.
The things this book covers are the dangers of online gaming, the dangers of online chat rooms, the dangers of social media sites, and the incredible wisdom of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. I'm not kidding. This book seems obsessed with the idea that no self-respecting computer programmer or visionary would allow their kids anywhere near the internet. As far as the dangers the book mentions, truthfully if you played Warcraft in college, these dangers are nothing you don't already know about. This book is written for someone like my mom, who hardly logins into Facebook and only has an email account so she can use sites like Amazon or eBay.
There are some redeeming features to the book, however, such as it does offer suggestions on how to limit your children's screen time. There are some useful tips to keep your child engaged with the world around them. I also learned some slang and terminology I didn't know, but by the time my kids are old enough to date and take an interest in such things, it will have all changed. I did appreciate that the Goods stressed the point that screen time of any kind should be regulated and monitored. They even use their own experience as parents of teenagers to show how they practice what they preach. I respect that.
Overall, I give the book a 3 out of 4 stars, not because it is badly written, because it is not. I didn't notice any errors or awkwardness in the text. I'm giving it a 3 because I don't feel like I was the audience for it. If you want to see what you are up against as a parent, this is a good beginners book.
