Burn Zones: Playing Life's Bad Hands by Jorge P. Newbery is a gripping autobiography of the journey from rags to riches of the author, Jorge. It teaches the outcome of perseverance in midst of the low points in life.

Jorge, at the age of seven began working as a paperboy, and from then on moves to making money by several means, he starts a ice cream business at the age of eleven and at the age of thirteen he gets into a regular job. The book takes you through the journey from a paperboy to a real estate mogul. The author stresses on the burn zones at every point in his life, and he teaches us never to look back but to persevere through them. Though he faced great loses at the real estate business, a greater burn zone, yet Jorge decides to move ahead, not taking into consideration the mocking from the society, which made him successful in life.

Jorge was a very skilled enterpreneur at a very young age. It is inspiring to see how the young boy is determined and focused amid the failures in life. The title of the book sets a theme to the story of the author's life, that no matter how many burn zones Jorge had been in, he never let go of his goal, he kept moving forward. It importance of support from family is also brought out in an extraordinary manner. The book also brings out the problems of inequality and racism in the society. Through all these struggles, Jorge never gives up, pushes his limits. It is an encouragement and a motivation to all those who think they cannot succeed.

I loved the book for various reasons, one of which is the author's character, his integrity and his attitude towards life is commendable. The author does not hide his failures he exposes the reality of the hardships of a successful enterpreneur. It is a simple read and I found it difficult to put the book down. I cannot name anything that I disliked about the book as I absolutely loved it and would definitely recommend it.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I loved reading through every page of the book and the book is well edited without any errors. I would recommend this book especially to enterpreneurs and those that are in need of motivation.

The book is a simple narrative of the author’s life and his experience, rather than a preachy “how-to guide” to instant success. Loved reading it. I really enjoyed your review. 🙂

I have been debating on reading this book ever since it popped up as a book to review. However, I am not normally a non-fiction fan when reading for pleasure. It sounds like there are elements that are more story-driven, however, so maybe I'll give it a shot.
