[Following is a volunteer review of "The Toki-Girl and the Sparrow-Boy Book 1" by Claire Youmans.]
I really love the story and I think the book needs more recognition. First off, I'd like to start with the plot. It is set in the ancient Meiji era, and another reason why I love this is because it is set in Japan, my favorite country. The etymology of the Toki-girl is really outstanding and sweet. The ending of the story is very satisfying and I like how Azuki finally has her freedom. Secondly, I'd like to talk about the characters. Let's start with the Toki-girl's parents, Hachibei her father, and Chizuyo her mother. Hachibei is described to seem gruff, but he possessed an honest, generous, and loving heart, and he loved his wife more than anything. He is also hardworking, he is willing to climb mountains and swim oceans just to earn enough money to support his family. So far he is what I saw as an ideal man. His wife, Chizuyo, is not any different from him. She is kind, loving, and loves her husband and children more anything. Next we have the Toki-girl herself, Azuki. Azuki is a very likable character to me, not only because she is a very unique species of Toki, she is also very humane. Throughout the story she has shown more weaknesses than strength, and that is what makes her human, she is not afraid to show weakness. Aside from that, Azuki is also, in my opinion, a beautifully constructed character. Next is Shota, also known as the Sparrow-boy, he is Azuki's brother, and another well constructed character. He is described to be impetuous, curious, and impulsive, and he absolutely loves and adores his parents and sister. He is also described having a beautiful singing voice. I really like this character because of his determination to save his sister, even though he knew he'll have to go through a lot for it. The only thing I felt sad about is how Hachibei, a great man, dies a tragic death in which he doesn't deserve. Anyways, I really enjoyed reading it, I'd definitely recommend you to take a look. 4 out of 4.
