The book The Spirit of Want is a story focused on a middle-aged woman, light-bronze-skinned, dark-eyed and stunningly beautiful. She was adopted by the MacMiel’s family; A.J and his wife Agnes when they did not give birth to a child on time.

Lucy grew up to be self-centered, quick-tempered and inconsiderate. As a successful lawyer, she was known for little tolerance for inferior intelligence.

Lucy had over the years nursed bitterness and had built a tough defense around herself because she felt all the love she had when she was first adopted was transferred to baby Elizabeth when she was born, thus, she felt ignored.

Also, somewhere in her mind, she assumed that her adopted parents see her as black because A.J had mentioned it several times, she thought that adopting her was like a magnanimous gesture to the underprivileged and that she does not belong there. Therefore, she felt left out and would not see them as a family. Her life was hers and she would not listen to anyone's opinion on what she should do, consider or not.

There was Luke Osbourne, a very fine gentleman, a surgeon and younger associate to A.J. MacMiel. Luke had his past to deal with, his former wife Samantha was a sad story for him however, he was more collected, calm and focused on his career.

Unsurprisingly, the very first private moment Luke Osbourne had with Lucy was a very dramatic and tragic one. Luke couldn’t drive back home in his car as it had been stripped alongside two other cars at the car park and so, he got in with Lucy in her car for a drive down to Atlanta. They had just had a dinner party at the Atlanta club that night and Lucy drove drunk and half sane at a very high speed.

She was going to avoid hitting a cat when they got into an accident. Lucy did not report the accident but rather towed her car. The case became a big one when it was later discovered and reported that a woman‘s dead body was found at the site of the accident, whether Lucy was the one who hit her or not was uncertain but suspicion was raised on why she did not report the accident when it happened.

Weeks later, Luke was subpoenaed but before the day he appeared in court, he and Lucy had already got close and had gone out on a date, surprisingly, Luke had started to fall for her. Unfortunately, Lucy was charged with vehicular manslaughter and 6 months after she was charged, Luke and Lucy got married and honeymooned in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. They got married without any of their family members present. During their honeymoon, Henry Townsend called to inform that court had decided to drop the charges of manslaughter, that moment was a very relieving one for Lucy as tears rolled down her cheeks.

Just when Luke and Lucy were starting their life together again on a fresh page, events began to unfold

The storyline is such an interesting one as it unravels mysteries and unimaginable storylines. It is full of suspense and must-read for book lovers. Why would Lucy decide to abort their baby without considering her husband’s opinion or any other persons? among many other questions is one to look forward to.

I rate this book The Spirit of Want 4 out of 4 stars because of its very interesting and unique breakdown. The author Williams Coles made use of understandable and expressive terms to drive home his imaginative description.

The book is expressive with no noticeable grammatical error and this is what I like most about the book. This book is exceptionally flawless therefore; there is nothing I dislike about it.
