How to Define Yourself: Taking Control of your life by Chuck Clifton is a self-motivational, non-fictional under one hundred page book count. Even though it is an easy read with simple words and grammar that are comprehensible, it is filled with in-depth information on ways to change your life for the better.

Although it may be difficult to change your lifestyle especially your response to situations, Chuck Clifton came up with a practical method that one can use to define himself or herself. This technique has three components, they are; stimulus, space of time and response. To help the reader apprehend the components, he gives instances where they are applicable in real-life situations. For instance, stimulus can be the usage of offensive terms by someone that is intended for you; caught in that position, you might take a few moments before reacting, that time frame before your reaction can be considered as the space of time; ultimately, there is a response, thus you may choose to react or let it slide.

Seeking help from a specialist when you are going through an unbearable situation may be challenging. Having gone through similar problems, I am grateful to the author for coming up with such an analytical method to help solve my problem. Chuck Clifton having shared his own experiences coupled with other's reactions to our daily life experiences does not only make the book engaging but relatable on a personal level.

Although the book has a lot of great points, my major dislike has to do with the lack of order; the book was not sub-divided into chapters, topics and subtopics making it seem like a long essay where topics are randomly discussed, this made the book a bit boring to read. Even though it is often theorized that repetitive studies yield the best results in terms of understanding, I did not like the superfluous nature of the book’s flow. To me it was like running the same distance, countless times back and forth hence I recommend that the book should not be read at a sitting, that way you get the time to reflect on every topic and likewise not feel it is repetitive.

Above all else, I enjoyed this book immensely. There were no grammatical errors hence I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I think it’s a great book which could help reshape your life for the better if not the best. I will recommend this book to all readers especially the self-help book fanatics.
