Burn Zones by Jorge P Newbery was an unexpected love for me. I chose the book because I expected something similar to Born To Run, which is a longtime favorite. Shortly after downloading, I realized that this guy authors finance books, and is probably not my cup of tea. I decided to press on and was thoroughly surprised.

Burn Zones is a memoir with more. Like a typical biography, Newbery gives a decent glimpse into his life. He grows up as the son of an immigrant in California. His entrepreneurial spirit is evident at a young age, leading him to financial success very quickly.

What sets this book apart is that his story intertwines sound business and financial advice, as well as tips for life in general. Somewhere woven into all of that is athletic success. Just as I catch a hint of arrogance and begin to get annoyed with him, he becomes relatable. Newbery exhibits humility and expertise simultaneously. As a junior landlord, I've become a fan. His writing style develops as the book goes on and I am left with the feeling of having spent hours with a great friend and mentor. Though I disagree with him on some points politically, he does an excellent job of sharing his perspectives without being offensive or overbearing.

My favorite portion of the book was the rise and fall of his Woodland Meadows complex. Newbery purchase a 1,100 unit complex in Columbus, Ohio. He shares with readers his joy at such an accomplishment, and his shame when it is ultimately demolished. The only negative I could say is that it takes a little bit to settle in and begin to enjoy. I encourage anyone reading to give it a little time.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Christopher McDougall or interested in super athletes. The book also appeals to those who manage properties and work in real estate. I also found the book comforting for myself as I care for aging parents and I think others would enjoy it for this element as well. If that wasn't enough, it's a great read for anyone finding love later in life. I give it 4 out of 4 Stars , well done. I am excited to read more books by Jorge Newbery!

The book is exceptionally well edited and there is one instance of profanity on page 229.

The book is a simple narrative of the author’s life and his experience, rather than a preachy “how-to guide” to instant success. Loved reading it. I really enjoyed your review.
