Daisy’s Run by Scott Baron follows the story of Daisy Swarthmore as she wakes up aboard the Váli. An impact has breached the ship’s shields and the ship’s systems are on the fritz. Daisy is put to the task of repairing the ship, but after a series of malfunctions, she finds herself questioning Malorie, the ship’s AI, and her fellow crewmates. She eventually manages to escape the Váli and make her way to Earth, only to find that things are the way she thought they would be. She is forced to reconcile with a reality that completely opposes everything she’s ever believed.

There are many things to be praised in this novel, namely the vivid imagery and exceptional word choice. Scott Baron is able to describe the ship’s detail to the point where you can feel the borderline claustrophobia of the crawl spaces or the weightlessness of the zero-g created by the vacuum of space. I could almost imagine myself aboard the Váli with the crew. His choice of words is nothing to scoff at either. He is able to choose precisely the right phrases to create the exact atmosphere he needs in a given scene.

That said, the pacing does leave something to be desired. At times, the scenes seem to progress too quickly, with little to no segue to ease between them. An example of this can be found within the multiple explicit scenes. They are brought on by either very little transitional writing or out of the blue for next to no reason. The latter example serves nearly no other purpose to the story than the fact that it happened. Besides the more explicit sections, the pacing, in general, feels just a tad too fast. Working with filler is a sensitive balancing act when it comes to any form of content, but in this case, it feels a bit lacking. A good metaphor would likely be being barely able to see the ribs of a slightly malnourished animal.

If I were to rate this book, I would give it 3 out of 4 stars. As much as I may critique its pacing, the story is still very well written, and the editing is exceptional. It is also extremely engaging! Whenever I picked it up to read, I could hardly make myself put it down again. I kept longing to travel back into the world of the book and follow Daisy along on her adventure.

I believe this book would greatly appeal to a young adult audience. The writing style isn’t overcomplicated, yet it’s also sophisticated enough to meet the average standard of that level of novel. The language used and the nature of the more explicit scenes also makes it unsuitable for younger audiences. Those who enjoy science fiction will absolutely love this book, just as I did. I might just read it again before I go after the rest of the series!
