The spirit of Want is a cocktail of politics, love, death, law, medicine, wealth, poverty and crime. It is safe to say that it takes a great and accomplished author to intertwine these vastly different themes into one perfect novel. William H. Coles's skills as an author are thus unquestionable as evidenced by the way he successfully completed a novel that included all the above-mentioned themes with surgical precision.

With vivid narration and skillful characterization, William H. Coles opens our mind's eye to the ramifications that are a result of each character's decision. The story is so perfectly narrated that every turn of events in the story is justified by prior events and the results are unquestionable. One is made to identify with the characters to the extent that we are angered by their actions, saddened by their sorrows and touched by their plight.

In the display of his vast knowledge and deep research, the author transitions the setting from the American suburbia to the gutters of rural Africa; from posh sports cars to ill-maintained and outdated sedans. When dealing with medicine, law , religion or politics the author employs the grammar and diction that is appropriate for the field thus making the reading more convincing hence adding to the general success of the novel.

He also touches on many issues that each one of us will inevitably come across directly or indirectly in our lives. This makes the novel play the role of an eye-opener to the readers by outlining the modern-day religious and socio-political climate. From deceitful spiritual healers to politicians who know nothing about politics and greedy doctors, the author combines all these ingredients to come up with one "tasty" narrative.

What I appreciate the most about this book is the realisticness of the whole tale, the way the plot develops makes it easy for the reader to understand and anticipate more drama. It's also so professionally edited that there are no typo or grammatical errors.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 , taking into account the irrefutable hard work the author clearly put in writing this novel. The editing of the book left no stone unturned adding to the overall quality of the novel. William H. Coles used irony and social satire as building blocks to build on his story. Indeed such a piece of work deserves a place in my bookshelf. I recommend this novel to anyone who admires a good read and a bit of advise in life from teenagers to adults.
