In his book Skills of the Warramunga, Greg Kater continues to tell the story of Jack ‘Jacko’ O’Brien and Jamie Munro, two wartime friends who have been through thin and thick together. The last book of the trilogy, Skills of the Warramunga has the reader follow Jacko and Jamie all the way to Malaysia, back then still a part of the British Empire called Malaya. While trying to help an old friend, Jacko and his half-sister Sarah use their incredible aboriginal skills to track through the Malayan jungle. However, this is not the last time they will be forced to use their extraordinary skills.

Johnny Cook, Jamie and Jacko’s friend from their mission in Egypt, had apparently been kidnapped into the Malayan jungle. It seems only the Australians might be able to find him. As loyal friends, they set out into the hot and humid jungle to rescue Johnny. They could never have known what world-changing events are they about to partake in.

Anyone who has read the first two books of the series is well aware of Greg Kater’s incredible talent for wartime related stories. As before, the author does not disappoint. This action-packed novel bombards you with unexpected twists and turns. You will find yourself in the crossfire between the seriousness of the matter and witty humor. You will be under attack by realistic, but not too detailed, descriptions of weapons, maneuvers and fights. And as much as you can resist it, you will finally surrender to the power of friendship, loyalty and love.

Greg Kater is a superb storyteller. The book is filled with drama, action, danger, but also human kindness, happiness and love in all its forms. What is more, the characters are real and you can see them grow and learn before your very own eyes. The author describes all that in an exact, engaging and enchanting way. As always, he skillfully weaves phrases in other languages without ever confusing the reader.

Due to all the aforementioned advantages, I rate Skills of the Warramunga 4 out of 4 stars. There was nothing that I disliked about the book. It is an exciting and exceptional example of war related stories. Also, it is an incredible friendship tribute. It is both realistic and romantic, and both serious and side-splitting. Anyone who has read the first two books in the series will definitely love this one too. Readers who are not familiar with Greg Kater’s previous works do not have to be hesitant as to understanding the plot. The author subtly mentions the events from his previous books in the dialogues. All in all, as long as you do not mind some blood-spilling, and are all for fast-paced stories with real-life characters and emotions, this read is a real treat for you. So go ahead and join the ranks of Warramunga fans!
