What happens when you are at the top and everything crumbles? In William H. Coles novel, The Surgeon’s Wife, Dr. Clayton Otherson, a well respected surgeon whom seemingly has it all, starts performing unnecessary weight loss surgeries and makes a fatal mistake. Everything around him starts to unravel. His long time friend, mentor, and colleague, Dr. Mike Boudreaux, the chief of surgery, must take action. Clayton psychologically starts spinning out of control. He is losing everything, including his wife Catherine and daughter Mellissa. As tensions rise in the house and the marriage is ending Catherine is drawn to Mike for comfort and a romance begins. How far will Clayton go to get revenge when he has nothing to lose?
I found The Surgeon’s Wife by William H. Cole to be captivating read. I was intrigued by the medical/ethical dilemma of treating patients with bariatric surgery. The conflict between the two doctors could be felt and was conveyed well throughout the novel. The chemistry and dynamics between characters as the story unfolded made me want to continue reading to feed my curiosity of their lives, forgetting about my own. The ending was shocking and unpredictable!
In this book I liked the development of the relationships between the characters the best. The relationship between Mike , Catherine and Mellissa was relatable. You felt Mike’s compassion and love seep through the pages. The only thing I disliked about the book was the artwork. I did not feel the cover or the artwork contributed to how remarkable well the novel is written.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. The storyline held my attention and was a quick read with an intriguing conclusion. This book would appeal to readers whom take interest in medical drama.
