Watching the news and television shows we see police officers as saving lives and arresting the bad guys. In the novel Twisted but True by Darren Burch you will be taken into another side of police work that few see. While reading the novel you will continue to question everything you thought you knew about police work. You will also find yourself questioning if the story you are reading is even possible.
Darren Burch takes you on his personal journey as to why he chose to be a police officer. He gives you a look into his own personal family life story, the feelings and even the mistakes he made along the way. This allows the reader to relate to him on a personal level throughout the book and the stories he tells. Seeing and relating to the stories on a personal level makes it more realistic and connectable for the reader.
You may ask why the chapters are titled Cheek-Filet, Sheer Sheep Slaughter, and Chasing Mad Cow? They are titled in this manner to give you a sneak peak into what you are about to read. I found many of the titles left me very curious or questioning what the story could even be about. The title captures your curiosity and pulls you in making you want to read more in order to find out what the story was going to be about. I found it very difficult to even put the book down because the curiosity would get the better of me.
The book does discuss very real and serious crimes that took place but with a humorous side to it. It can be very graphic or gory at times but does leave you laughing at the same time. I also enjoyed that there was a Twist included and the end of every story. This allows the reader to know what happened once the whole story played out. I also appreciate the fact that the author gives credit to all that helped him make this book a reality.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it to those that are into true stories or crime novels. Due to some of the graphic details such as sexual assaults, murders or robberies I would recommend a mature audience. Although there were a couple of grammatical errors it did not take away from the story, so I gave this novel a 4 out of 4 stars.
