Conflict on the Yangtze by Greg Kater is a historical book. It covers events after World War II, and what was happening in China and the instability that was there. It's the fourth novel in the Warramunga series.
It was the year 1946 when an MI6 agent and his partner were investigating an opium drug dealing process. The agent was injured in a field in China and then disappears. His partner, Lee Drake managed to escape. The British Colonel John Cook contacts two dedicated agents from the Investigation Service located in Australia - Jamie Munro and Jack O'Brien with the help of America's ally Harry William. And they all begin a thrilling and exciting adventure to find the missing agent and prevent the drug dealing that's transported to the USA, the Philippines, and Australia. Before they begin the chase they group with Lee Drake, the partner of the missing agent. After they unite, they find themselves traveling down the Yangtze River, an unpleasant river with no sense of hospitality.
The author Greg Kater accomplished the ability to compose a historical book that stands out and entertains the reader. It conveyed the life in China at that time in a realistic way, how unstable China was and almost everything is backed up with historical research.
Yes, this is the fourth book in a series but you can as well read it without reading the entire series. The relationship and the history between the characters are explained well, so you will never get lost while reading.
The Australian based author wrote this book with a remarkable style. It's captivating and beautiful. You will get hooked from the first page, and it's the type of novel you just can't put down.
What I liked the most about the book was the connection between the two antagonists Jamie and Jack "Jacko." No one represents a hero in the story more than the other, their personalities aren't typical yet the relationship seems natural and healthy. And they always know how to lighten the mood even when their lives are in danger.
There's nothing that I didn't enjoy about the book, it was funny, thrilling and extremely exciting. The author wrote the book with good grammar and spelling.
Due to all of the mentioned factors, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The audience to the book is large, some people aren't so keen about historical novels yet this one is hard to ignore and I recommend it to anyone.
