The Surgeon’s Wife by William H. Cole centers on the life of Mike Boudreaux, chief of surgery. Mike appears to have everything he wants, a lucrative career and a loving girlfriend, but there is one thing standing in his way. Clayton Otherson, former mentor to Mike and current surgeon in the same hospital, has been making drastic errors during his procedures. When the board is forced to debate whether they should keep Clayton on staff, Mike vouches for him. Unfortunately for Mike, he is faced with the reality that Clayton’s position is beyond saving. Clayton’s spiral into infamy pushes his wife away and into Mike’s arms, leaving the three in a web of fury.
The two main characters, Mike and Clayton, are polar opposites. Mike comes from humble beginnings and worked his way to the top. Clayton, however, was born into money and has never had to work for much in his life. This is a concept the audience will be familiar with, so it makes understanding the characters much easier. It was interesting how their choices in spouses were a reflection of their upbringings as well. Mike's girlfriend, Rosie, is an artist in the city who obtains a shy yet humble dispostion. Catherine, Clayton's wife, is significantly younger than him and moves through her life with an air of confidence that cannot be matched by Rosie.
Clayton was my favorite character by far because the author did not hold back with him. He is a typical bully who practically consumes his own ego every day for breakfast. Clayton feels that he can do no wrong and that the world owes him whatever he desires. The character’s core foundation remained the same throughout the entire book, even with the abrupt changes in his life. There is a moment in the book where his daughter Mellissa is arrested at a protest in San Francisco – a foreign city to all of them. Instead of immediately coming to her aid, he sends Mike to help his wife Catherine with the issue. This is a prime example of his selfishness leading his every decision.
The author had an incredible flow to this work. Every event correlated to another so smoothly that you never had to guess why something was happening. Even with the introduction of new characters, one never gets lost in their purpose because of the consistency in the author’s writing. The descriptors through the entire novel were also excellent. It was very easy to picture what was happening, even in the surgical procedures. This makes it so those who are not in the medical field can enjoy this book without feeling insecure.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I like the flow of the book more than anything. I never got lost in the many characters and progressions in their lives. I did not have many dislikes with this book, however, I would have preferred for the bond between Mike and Catherine to have been introduced early on. It would have been a great expansion on the book and would keep the audience interested in finding direct hints regarding their romance. Had the title been different, I would have never known they would connect. This book was clearly professionally edited and would be perfect for those who enjoy suspense.
